Design by Liz Goldberg of CAROLYNLEONA | Photography by Abigail Jackson for Rue Magazine.

A real-life demonstration of how to embrace a dark and enveloping aesthetic for a busy, lived-in family home.

When we think of a "magazine-worthy" home, we often picture cold, pristine spaces where nothing is out of place… and certainly where no dogs or children reside. But recently, while browsing Rue Magazine, I fell in love with a 1990s brick home in North Carolina, redesigned by Liz Goldberg of CAROLYNLEONA.

Designed for a cool, art-collecting mother and her two sons, this interior is a masterclass in dark and moody aesthetics that actually feels cozy, welcoming, and deeply lived-in. It is the perfect, tangible proof of the "scenography secrets" we love to explore here at Kraft & Carat.

Let's take a closer look at the stunning reception areas and break down exactly why this design works so beautifully.

The Living Room: A Velvet and Khaki Sanctuary

The moment you step into the living room, you are enveloped by a rich, dark khaki green. The CAROLYNLEONA team masterfully applied the color drenching technique: painting the walls, ceiling, window trim, and moldings in the exact same deep hue.

To soften this dramatic backdrop, the seating area features a warm hazelnut velvet sofa and plush upholstery. This warm-toned center is instantly elevated by the golden glow of brass and brushed bronze lighting fixtures, which bounce warm light throughout the shadowy space.

The Dining Room: A Whimsical, Neo-Classical Transition

The deep green color drenching of the ceiling, moldings, and architectural arches seamlessly continues into the adjacent dining room. But here, the designers introduced a magnificent surprise on the walls: William Morris’s iconic "Pimpernel" wallpaper (by Morris & Co.).

This botanical print is a stroke of genius. It naturally weaves together the deep green of the woodwork and the rich hazelnut tones of the living room sofa, creating a plush, almost Victorian conservatory vibe. To expand the room and multiply the ambient light, an immense gilded mirror leans elegantly against the wallpapered wall.

To balance this historic, heritage-rich background, the furniture and accessories remain strictly modern with clean, simple lines:

  • A massive, raw wood dining table, reminiscent of a rustic farmhouse table, adds a beautiful, organic texture.

  • Sober, comfortable dining chairs, upholstered in an elegant beige fabric soften the geometry.

  • The styling is kept strictly minimalist: a large, white textured monochrome canvas and a matte black, wabi-sabi-style pitcher vase keep the room firmly anchored in the 21st century.

A Cohesive, Anchored Flow

While the private rooms of the house open up to lighter, airier walls, the overall design remains beautifully cohesive. The dark trim, the staircase, and the doors are kept dark throughout the house, acting as visual anchors that stitch the entire home's narrative together. It is a stunning, sophisticated blend of eras and styles.

The Finishing Touch: Curated Styling

While custom velvet sofas and color-drenched walls are an investment, there is one styling secret in this home that is accessible to everyone: Coffee Table Books.
Whether stacked on the brutalist dining table or styled on the dark wood console, books bring instant architecture, soul, and culture to a moody room.

If you look closely at the photos from this home tour, you can spot the exact books the designers used to ground the space. Here they are, alongside my personal favorite, to help you recreate this specific blend of moody, organic, and family-friendly design:

  • Robert Stilin: Interiors Spotted right in the living room! Stilin is renowned for creating casually elegant, comfortable homes that effortlessly mix vintage patina, contemporary art, and modern lines.

  • Golden Light: The Interior Design of Nickey Kehoe Also featured in this home, this book is a masterclass in eclectic, soulful design. It shows you how to curate spaces that feel gathered over time, rather than bought all at once.

  • Timeless Interiors by Axel Vervoordt (Curator's Addition) I added this specific book because its classic, moody cover perfectly bridges the gap between the modern living room and the vintage spirit of the dining room. The Belgian master of raw, quiet luxury teaches you how to create spaces that transcend trends by mixing historical patina with profound elegance.

The Takeaway

What Liz Goldberg and the CAROLYNLEONA team achieved here is a brilliant lesson in balance. They proved that dark colors don't shrink a space—they elevate it. By mixing the heavy, historic weight of William Morris wallpaper with sleek, modern silhouettes and tactile fabrics, they created a home that is as sophisticated as it is livable.

It is the perfect reminder for all design lovers: don't be afraid of the dark.
